90th anniversary of Rosalind Franklin, pioneer of DNA research
July 25, 2010
2010 marks the 90th Anniversary of the birth of Dr Rosalind Franklin, a British born scientist (25 July 1920 to 16 April 1958).
Her methodical pioneering work on X-Ray diffraction led to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. Without her diligent research, it is thought that Watson and Crick's theoretical structure would have remained unproven.
Sadly her early death from ovarian cancer in 1958 meant that she was effectively unacknowledged when Watson, Crick and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962, as only living individuals were eligible for nomination.
